The term ERP which stands for Enterprise Resource Planning has been there for quite some time. Many find this a hard concept to understand. However, if you see this at the basic level, this concept has been around since ages. To understand this better let us imagine an analogy and construct a story.

Imagine your mother plans to cook your favorite dish when you were in school. Let us imagine the turn of events leading into this. Your mother has her favorite recipe written down in her book of recipes. She calls you and gives you a list of items to purchase from the recipe list. Before giving you the list, she checks the items which are already present at home and gives you only the items which are not there. Some of the items in this list could be because she needs them fresh and can’t be stored for example Vegetables, Meat, Dairy products, etc. Your father gives you the money say required say $200 for you to go and purchase the items. He reminds you that he would want a correct information of each items purchased and at what price. You go to different places where you know you could get these items and purchase the items at different prices. You might buy a few of the items at regular places where you usually buy and a few items from places where you know you will get the best. You bring these items and hand it over to your mother.

Your mother then starts the process of preparing the dish. Based on the sequence in which she wants to use these items, she defines a sequence in which she would use these items. Wash the vegetables, cut them as required, boil a few of them, use a few of them raw, prepare a mix to get the desired taste etc. She could say the dish would be ready within a specific time. Once the dish is ready, she might call you and ask you to taste it and give your opinion about the taste or she herself tastes it. If found wanting she might do a few things to get the taste right.

Your father might also ask you to give the details of the items purchased and at what cost. Based on this, the balance amount could be handed over back to your father. This could be very similar to what happens in each household, and this has been happening since ages.

If we could relate the above events to what happens in a organization

If you see the main departments present in any organization, these are covered at a household level with the same set of task. Of course, once it gets into an organization level more structure and accountability might come based on its importance. However, at a basic level these are the sequence in which any such activities happen.

An ERP is a comprehensive software to computerize such activities where each of the departments mentioned above can cohesively work towards manufacturing a product/Project. An ERP solution consists of different modules which could be implemented in each of the departments to do their day today tasks. The sequence of activities makes sure that data flows in a sequence of events with a reference to the product being manufactured.

It is the same set of events with a slight difference for projects as well.

For an ERP solution to work well, the basic infrastructure required to run the software plays an important role. From the server to the list of other computers devices connected to it along with its peripherals has to work well for the computer software program to give the desired output. Many times, the client systems connected to the server are located at different places and needs to be connected either through a cable with good transfer speed or through the Internet. If the medium of connecting to the server is remote, then a robust VPN could be a possible solution.
